Penn Yan Police Collaborate with US Marshals in Arrest of Florida Fugitive and Local Accomplice

Penn Yan, NY — In a coordinated effort between local and federal law enforcement, the Penn Yan Police Department assisted the United States Marshals Service in the arrest of a Florida fugitive, Jacques Gentis, 21, and a local accomplice, Sydnee Zigas, 23, both of whom are now being held at the Yates County Jail pending extradition to Florida.

On August 28, 2025, law enforcement officials apprehended Gentis at the boat launch on Prospect Avenue in Penn Yan without incident. Gentis was wanted in Sarasota County, Florida, on four separate arrest warrants related to armed burglary and shooting into a structure, a serious felony charge that posed significant risks to public safety. In addition, he had an outstanding warrant in Charlotte County, Florida, for failing to appear in court, further complicating his legal situation.

According to law enforcement sources, Gentis had been actively evading authorities and was considered a fugitive from justice. His apprehension in Penn Yan underscores the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between local police departments and federal agencies in tracking and safely detaining individuals with serious criminal charges.

Following Gentis’ arrest, federal authorities continued their investigation, which led to the arrest of Sydnee Zigas on September 5, 2025, at her residence on East Main Street in Penn Yan. Zigas is accused of aiding Gentis while knowing he was a fugitive, a charge that, if proven, carries potential legal consequences under both New York State law and federal statutes related to harboring or assisting fugitives.

Both Gentis and Zigas are currently being held at the Yates County Jail as authorities coordinate their extradition to Florida, where they will face the multiple charges pending against them. Law enforcement officials have emphasized that their cooperation demonstrates a commitment to public safety and inter-jurisdictional collaboration, ensuring that fugitives cannot evade justice by crossing state lines.

Penn Yan Police Chief Thomas Dunham commented on the arrests, stating, “We are proud of the collaboration between our local officers and the US Marshals Service. Operations like this are critical in protecting our communities and ensuring that those wanted for serious crimes are brought to justice safely and efficiently.”

The investigation highlights a growing trend of fugitives traveling outside their home states in an attempt to avoid prosecution. Law enforcement officials note that such cases often require meticulous planning, coordination, and communication between agencies to prevent dangerous encounters and to successfully apprehend suspects without incident.

While Gentis faces multiple felony charges in Florida, Zigas’ legal situation will also be closely scrutinized. Authorities indicate that individuals who knowingly assist fugitives can face serious consequences, which may include criminal charges, fines, and potential prison time, depending on the severity of their involvement.

Residents of Penn Yan expressed relief that the arrests were carried out without incident, particularly given the serious nature of the charges against Gentis. Many highlighted the importance of local police and federal agencies working together to maintain safety and order in the community.

The case remains under investigation, and both local and federal authorities continue to collaborate on ensuring a smooth extradition process for both Gentis and Zigas. Penn Yan Police encourage anyone with additional information about ongoing criminal activity in the area to come forward and assist in further investigations.
